CNN’s “New Day” aired an excerpt from a transcript of an interview President Donald Trump gave to CNN’s Dana Bash on Tuesday, in which the president said he didn’t want the government to pay for the inauguration.
The transcript was provided to CNN by a source who said they were not authorized to reveal the conversation to the network.
Trump said he “doesn’t want” the government funding for the ceremony and that he’d prefer to be paid by a private company instead of the government.
CNN has not released the transcript of the interview.
White House spokesman Sean Spicer said the White House had not seen the transcript.
He also said that Trump didn’t say anything about government funding, nor did he call for a government shutdown.
Spicer told reporters that he didn.
“He didn’t call for the government shutdown,” Spicer said.
“We don’t have any information on that whatsoever.”
Spicer added that the president “didn’t want to pay anybody” and that it was not “an issue of government funds” that Trump discussed.
Trump also said he’d be willing to pay private security for the event.
Spicer declined to comment on the exact amount the government is expected to spend, citing the ongoing investigation into Russia’s alleged election meddling.
