Women who have been pregnant are not allowed a job because they are not considered economically viable.
The government has recently made it mandatory for women to have at least a bachelor’s degree in order to get employment, the Hindustan Times reported.
The issue has taken a sharp turn recently after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government announced that there will be an exemption for women with children who are not yet four years old.
A day earlier, the prime minister announced that women would be exempt from compulsory military service if they were pregnant and had not started work in three months.
Women with children are expected to work on the farm or as domestic help for their family members.
This has been a sticking point with some sections of the society, including women, who have accused the government of not taking their concerns seriously.
Earlier, women who have a child were not allowed jobs because of their poor education, according to the Hindostan Times.
“Women who have babies now are also considered economically dependent, and will be allowed to work even if they have no degree.
They have no choice but to go back to work, unless they have a degree,” the newspaper quoted a women’s rights activist as saying.
